EXPO 2010: The Czech Pavilion will have part of its exposition in front of the building entrance
Prague, 14/1/2010
Prague, January 13th, 2010 – The Commissioner General Office (CGO) of the Czech participation at the World Exposition EXPO 2010 in Shanghai has acquired permission to build a unique architectural element in front of the entrance to the Czech Pavilion. An elegant spiral will rise up by the main entrance, providing visitors with information about the Czech Republic and its pavilion, and simultaneously functioning as a refuge from the sun and rain. The Czech pavilion will therefore offer a unique show, a strong experience during the exposition visit and maximum care and comfort to EXPO 2010 visitors.
The spiral, which itself is an architectural specialty, is called a “Ribbon” due to its shape. Its interior wall is, like the floor of the exposition area, covered with an artificial lawn, with four TV screens located in the corners where visitors can find information on the Regions of the Czech republic and the exposition itself. The TVs will also show, among others, the winning work for youth with the theme “In 20 years, what will make my city and life in it better”. The visitors will therefore be able to meaningfully and pleasantly spend their time waiting to enter the pavilion.
The Czech participation Commissioner General Pavel Antonín Stehlík, the member of the Steering Committee for EXPO 2010, say: “The Czech Republic came up with the idea to install an object outside the pavilion first, and this is reflected in the length and complication during the negotiations with the Chinese organizers. However, in cooperation with the team of the Commissioner General, Hua Junduo, we finally succeeded in solving the complicated technical and safety questions and we are, of course, very glad for that.“
The spiral is twenty nine meters long and has a diameter over four meters in places. The front part can be moved due to safety. Due to the fact that the capacity of the Czech pavilion is up to 3,500 people an hour, and that the Czech exposition is already very attractive (as the only rented building, it appears on the official billboards of the World Exposition organizers), one can expect that it will not simply be a decorative element, but will also meet its practical role.
