EXPO 2010: Czech Pavilion at EXPO 2010 in Shanghai Takes Silver

Shanghai, 30/10/2010

Shanghai, 30 October 2010: In the evening of the last day of the biggest General World Fair of all time – EXPO 2010 in Shanghai – the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) awarded the Czech “Fruits of Civilisation” exposition as the second most creative in the leased pavilions category. It is the first time since Montreal 1967 that this Paris-based organisation awarded one of the main prizes to the Czech national participation at EXPO.

“I have been saying from the onset that in China we would like to present the Czech Republic as a country to which diverse ideas, cultures and technologies flow, and its citizens as a nation whose typical creativity leads to real Fruits of Civilisation,” said Commissioner-General Pavel Antonín Stehlík. “The silver medal for creativity, awarded by the supreme EXPO institute, means that we have managed to attain this objective through our efforts over the past year.”

The gold medal in the “C” category, i.e., leased pavilions with an area of up to two thousand square metres, was awarded to Slovenia. One hundred and ninety-two countries and fifty other exhibitors took part in the Better City, Better Life exposition.  Over eight and a half million people, i.e., twelve percent of the seventy-two million visitors to EXPO, visited the Czech exposition in this historically most competitive fair.
