Sunday 8 August saw the opening of an exhibition titled Archive of Miracles in the Czech Pavilion at EXPO 2010 The exhibition marked a start of associated events to the Czech exposition, the socalled Czech Design Weeks. The exhibition invited ten Czech designers. In addition to traditional industrial designers, the exhibition includes work of a fashion designer, architect, jewellery designer and a photographer. Their brief was to use different materials and create designs to a specific theme – dreams, yearning and intimately personal moments of happiness. Each author approached the brief in their own way, subject to their medium, but they also did not hesitate to try out new materials or techniques. The exhibits therefore interpret mundane object, such as a vase, chair or a pail, with personal emotions of their author, resulting in not in things that are not intended for serial production or sculptures, but in personal responses invested into ordinary objects.

We know that most foreign visitors go to Prague when visiting the Czech Republic. But how many of them really know how diverse the Czech Republic is? This thought led us to develop a unique presentation showcasing all 14 regions of the Czech Republic. Visitors who came to the national pavilion at EXPO 2010 in Shanghai between July 12 and 21 had a superb chance to learn that the Czech Republic is a multifaceted country and worth a visit. The presentation of the regions in all their diversity, prepared in cooperation with CzechTourism, was received with unexpected enthusiasm and, thus, successfully tied onto the programmes accompanying the Czech participation at EXPO 2010 in Shanghai.

Since its onset in the late 60s and early 70s, graffiti and street art have moved from the streets of New York – where the first writers, such as Keath Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, are now fine-art legends – to all corners of the globe, and from its original environment has begun to appear under the roofs of prestigious galleries (such as London’s Tate Modern gallery). From what originally belonged to the underground, it gradually developed its own artistic direction, and whether one is aware of it or not, graffiti and street art surround us in various types and forms and have become an integral part of city life.

The Czech Pavilion at World EXPO 2010 has had three ambitions in terms of the international marketing and promotion of the Czech Republic: to attract as many visitors as possible and show them what the Czech Republic’s inhabitants can do, gain interest of media and professional assessors in the exposition and, last but not least, to open new opportunities in China not only for Czech culture but also for Czech businessmen.

Only eleven days before the opening of EXPO 2010, on Tuesday 20 April, the Czech Pavilion opened its doors to its first visitors. The trial days, which were meant to show how Chinese visitors would react to the Czech Pavilion, how long their visits would take, what would interest them the most and what they would ask the hostesses about, attracted exceptional interest. Nearly 143 000 visitors came to see the Czech exposition even before EXPO 2010 had begun, and on Sunday 25 April it reached 115 % of its maximum daily capacity.

The Czech Republic is one of the 192 countries that will be presenting itself at EXPO 2010 in Shanghai. Aside from the permanent exhibition itself, the Czech Pavilion will also be vying for the attention of visitors with a wide range of side events, both directly inside the Czech Pavilion in the Multimedia Hall (the multi-functional gallery area) and also in various other venues on the Shanghai exhibitions grounds over the course of 184 days.

In the pavilion of the Czech Republic located in the centre of the Shanghai EXPO 2010 exhibition grounds, a construction of the national exhibition called the “Fruits of Civilization” is growing. Besides other things, it includes frames for 20 modules sized 4x4 meters that will mostly be suspended over the heads of the visitors and will represent symbolic city blocks housing original exhibits.

The EXPO 2010 in Shanghai starts in five months. The whole EXPO site for the biggest Universal Exposition of all times bringing together nearly two hundred countries and about fifty other exhibitors is approaching the final stages of preparation. This applies both to the pavilions which some participants are building themselves from scratch, and to the buildings rented by other countries, including the Czech Republic.

The phrases such as Xiangqi or Kwan-pai will probably not say much to the Czech reader. However, Mahjong will certainly open the eyes of at least somebody; Go to the majority and Dominoes to everybody. All the exotic names belong to board games and all of them are Chinese: Xiangqi is Chinese chess (probably it comes from an Indian basis, similarly to European, but they are not played much in Europe); Kwan-pai are paper cards (they were certainly already played by the year 1120 in the court of the Emperor S´eunho); in Mahjong, the player collects the tiles with the same symbols from the pyramid (the computer game has brought fame to this game all over the world); the history of Go dates back four thousand years (i.e. perhaps the oldest strategic game as such) and Dominoes approximately two thousand years (according to legend, Dominoes is said to have originated in the third century as a silent game for the night guards). Thus, it is not necessary to demonstrate that China has always considered the game as a very essential part of its culture.

Almost 200 countries will meet at the 2010 EXPO in Shanghai. Their national pavilions will border closely, but will also compete – for the attention and goodwill of the visitors. The World exposition is as much a cultural and artistic exhibition, as an opportunity for propaganda of the exhibiting countries.
